ABSTRACT

The word may have come from the Tartars to the Arabs, and been diffused in the Weft by the latter in the forms of Tobbat, Tub bat, Tibbat, etc. The moft common designation in the country itself would seem to be Bodyul, which, however, according to some authorities, as, for inftance, Henry Strachey (p. 1), applies only to Eaftern and Central Tibet, and according to others (Rockhill, Ethnology, p. 669) only to Central and Weftern Tibet.
