ABSTRACT

The volunteers were not a single group. They acted and felt differently depending on many factors: where they lived; what jobs they did; whether they were from England, Scotland, Ireland, or Wales; and a host of other factors. Before an examination of their motives is given, some exploration of these differences is in order. This section, then, will examine who joined the military, what class they were, where they were from, and what their ages were. The aim is to create a group picture that captures their differences as well as their similarities.
