Love and marriage in eleven cultures

Cultural stereotype has long asserted that Americans consider love a necessary precondition for marriage. As Burgess and Wallin (1953) wrote more than 40 years ago, “The expected, approved, and sanctioned precondition to marriage in American society is falling in love. According to our mores, love is the only right basis for marriage.”
