ABSTRACT

In the state of exhaustion in which they were after the burden and heat of this struggle, none but Portuguese hearts could have supported the fatigue of repairing the bastion forthwith; as in actual fact the King, Simão de Mello, and the chief officers and others, all came to assist in the work of rebuilding the ruins, at nearly 8 o’clock of the night. First of all the bastion was cleared of the dead bodies, amongst which were found 50 of the Portuguese, and 400 of the enemy which having been stripped of their weapons and clothing, were thrown down on the others lying at the foot of the wall.
