ABSTRACT
The preceding chapter presented a structural taxonomy of SLDMs. However, as common sense suggests, such a taxonomy does not allow us to establish translational equivalences (for further detail, see Siepmann 2000:275-281). Instead, correspondences between source and target-language markers must be inferred from functional similarities in their contextual or ‘discoursal’ uses.
