ABSTRACT

One of the motives for writing this book was to examine the continuities and discontinuities of Labour Party ideologies and education policies from 1900 to 2001. My reading of key texts about Labour history confirmed my suspicion that the Labour Party was not only a broad church but also continued for over one hundred years with ideologies that were always in tension and often in open conflict. One of the best stories about Labour Party politicians was the account that one Labour Cabinet Minister said of Herbert Morrison that he was his own worst enemy: ‘Not while I am alive he aint’ said Ernie Bevin. The beauty of the story is that it could be, and often has been, ascribed to quite different members of the Party.
