ABSTRACT
To what degree did business concerns per se set the founders down the road to imperialism? And to what degree, by contrast, did life bombard Englishmen with so many stimuli that some men were bound to become associated with the empire, as others became associated with coin collecting or cushion making? In other words, do we find an economic imperialism, or simply a bustling economic life?
