ABSTRACT
The argument so far has been quite negative. I have only tried to show (1) one way the state cannot engineer altruistic motives among people, and (2) the irrelevancy of an objection against it trying to do so from the point of view of individual freedom. I have said nothing about the benefits of altruism, why it is a value the state should promote.
