When the Rutherfurds were at home in Allamuchy, Mr. Danks, the farm manager of Tranquility, stood once a week at the desk of Winthrop Rutherfurd. His employer always asked the same question, “How is the farm?” In 1929 the answers were not good; prices were falling.
