ABSTRACT

The allocation of graduates to the fronts finally took place. My assignment was to the 1st Ukrainian Front. Several more people would ride with me, but the majority received assignments to the Belorussian fronts. In accordance with these orders, we distributed ourselves between cars when boarding the train. “Ukrainians” turned out to be in a more advantageous situation – there were no cars with capacity of fewer than “40 men and 8 horses,” and so we were comfortable due to our small number. The “Belorussians” were riding in a less comfortable four-axle “Pullman.”
