ABSTRACT

As illustrated in chapter 3, certain differences-and similarities-do exist in female and male candidate VideoStyles. However, due to the number of women running for the statewide offices (U.S. Senate and gubernatorial) typically examined in such studies, researchers (e.g., Banwart 2002; Bystrom 1995; Bystrom and Kaid 2002; Robertson 2000) have not examined the VideoStyles of female and male candidates by status (incumbent, challenger, open race), political party, and outcome of their race. Therefore, using the same data set described in chapter 3 from mixed-gender U.S. Senate and gubernatorial races waged between 1990 and 2002, this chapter responds to the question of whether female and male VideoStyles differ by these variables.
