ABSTRACT

This counter-polity refused all the usual conditions of human rule, both psychic and political: the division of powers between sovereign and executive, the exclusionist logic of inside/outside, and government by emergency and exception. In heaven it is perfect, but on earth its sway is not utopian; for now we glimpse dimly its perfection within a process of reconciliation that is but fragmentarily realized – like a fleeting passage of an aerial creature amongst the trees, which we are scarcely sure we have glimpsed at all. Reality is still saturated by evil invented in the angelic and human event of the Fall; this ensures that even the apparently noble is always fissured by a deep and subtle corruption. As time advances, this corruption worsens – nor does the descent of the Son and the Spirit halt this worsening. It is rather that this descent inaugurates an altogether different possibility: it opens a narrow chink of light, allowing, albeit inchoately, a certain counter-movement of advance and of progress for the few (intensely) and the many (dispersedly) towards the source of this light.
