ABSTRACT
Capacity management is a mature and well-understood activity that has been in existence for over 20 years. The main change over the last 10 years has been the large increase in the overall size of technical infrastructures, and in the number of hardware servers that have to be covered. The approach that is adopted by an organization depends on the human resources that are available. In all but the larger organizations, where dedicated resources may be available, it will be a subset of the comprehensive approach that is advocated in books and papers on the subject. This chapter summarizes the comprehensive approach and discusses a minimalist, exception-based approach.
