ABSTRACT

Working is a central part of most adults’ lives; indeed, they spend much of their lives at work. Work is not uniformly agreeable for all employees, of course. On the positive side, work provides income, offers a route to satisfaction and happiness, provides a way to contribute and be productive, develops opportunities for social interaction, and can give a general purpose and organizing structure for life. Along with love, Freud identified work as a major feature of a healthy life (Freud’s lieben und arbeiten: to love and to work).
