ABSTRACT

This chapter lists the rewards and the hassles inherent in being a therapist, asks you to take stock of these in your own life, and helps you to take action to increase the joys and decrease the negatives. Every profession has its problems and its satisfactions, and the mental health field is no exception. Psychologists Kramen-Kahn and Hansen (1998) list the main categories of stresses and rewards, as well as the most frequently endorsed ones among psychotherapists. Their advice? Minimize hazards, maximize rewards.
