On 9 June 2000 Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina interviewed Zadie Smith
about her then newly released novel, White Teeth. Gerzina is host of the
Book Show, a radio programme that airs nationally in the United States
and is recorded at WAMC in Albany, New York. A young author who had
achieved sudden fame, and was surprised by all the attention, Smith was
