ABSTRACT

Soldiers loom large in our history. If a typical non-Japanese American knows anything about Japanese American history, it is likely to be about the all-Nisei (second generation Japanese Amerian) 442nd Regimental Combat Team and about the concentration camps. Since World War II, Nisei veterans have been put on a pedestal representing the best of what we can become and have played a leading role in the Japanese American community, both in tangible ways and in our collective psyche. Sometimes, I wonder if this is such a good thing.
