ABSTRACT

[Filipino religion, as actually practiced, blends a passionate faith in Catholicism, acquired from the Spanish colonialists, with an equally passionate conviction that the pre-Spanish, pre-Catholic world of the spirits still exists. So argue the husband and wife writing team of Max and Salve Millard. In the first part of the article, Max Millard writes about Filipinos and Catholicism, noting the inroads made by pentecostal faiths. In the second part, Salve Millard writes about Filipino folk religion, particularly as she experienced it first hand during her childhood in the Philippines. In the third part, Marie Castillo-Pruden writes about the synthesis of Catholicism and folk custom in Filipino Christmas.]
