ABSTRACT
For those to whom the experience of the other-world journey is not given in visionary form, it is possible to accomplish it nevertheless by the mimesis of symbolic action. If the soul will not detach itself from the body and travel to heaven and hell, it is possible to undertake, in body as well as soul, a journey to places which symbolise heaven and hell, enduring on the way penances which symbolise the ordeals to be encountered in these realms.
