ABSTRACT
The immense manga medium has flowered in the space of only four decades and like springtime in a desert it may disappear entirely from the face of society as rapidly as it appeared. Like the democratic political systems of the post-war period in which they flourished, pop cultures like manga represent a highly specific form of culture based on the institution of political opposition and open social organization.
