ABSTRACT
Amateurism (‘amo’ meaning ‘I love’) was derived from an eighteenth-century appreciation of the fine and polite arts by gentlefolk who dabbled in activities without any desire for excellence. This explained their dislike of people who did try hard to be very good. Such people were professionals and others referred to as ‘quasi-amateurs’ or ‘pseudo professionals’.
