ABSTRACT

In the last chapter we looked at the sequences of activities on a number of monumental sites. Our view of Irish Neolithic landscapes today is dominated by the range of monumental additions that people in that period created over the course of 1,500 years or so. The megalithic tombs in places like Brú na Bóinne or Loughcrew may be the sites that most readily spring to mind, but we should also remember the physical scale of henge monuments such as the Giant’s Ring at Ballynahatty in Co. Down (Plate 5.1) and the spectacular effect of smaller-scale monuments, such as many portal tombs.
