ABSTRACT
Since capitalism arose and became the dominant socioeconomic system in the world several centuries ago, the only comprehensive challenge to that system has come from socialism. Capitalism has been criticized by liberal Christian philosophers and by fundamentalist Islamic thinkers, by anarchists and by opponents of modern technology. However, only its socialist critics proposed a well-defined and comprehensive alternative socioeconomic system for the contemporary era.
