ABSTRACT
Three years after perestroika began, the world s media projected dramatic images of economic hardship in the Soviet Union. In 1988-89 severe shortages of basic consumer goods developed, and Soviet citizens had to spend their time in ever-lengthening lines to obtain food and other household necessities. More and more goods were subjected to rationing. Pictures of empty store shelves seemed to portray a system in its death agony.
