ABSTRACT
So far we have examined women’s roles within the polis and within the oikos, but now need to turn to women’s involvement in economic activity outside the household; that is, to commercial activity. There are two themes of female work to be considered here, one, production and trade (very under-represented on pottery), and the other, prostitution (apparently over-represented). The reasons for this are interesting and complex.
