ABSTRACT

Hurricane Andrew devastated a substantial portion of metropolitan Dade County. Barely missing downtown Miami, the storm's most powerful winds left a band of destruction 300 blocks wide. This band stretched across a rapidly developing, mostly residential part of the county we refer to as South Dade. Fully nine out of ten homes were damaged in this vast area, extending all the way from Kendall Drive in the north to the Everglades and Biscayne Bay in the south (based on the South Dade Population Survey). Altogether 49,000 homes were rendered uninhabitable (Miami Herald 1994,24 August).
