ABSTRACT
Augustin Berque teaches cultural geography at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales in Paris, and is director of the Centre de recherches sur le Japon contemporain. He is the author of many books on Japan, including Le Sauvage et I’artifice (1986), and on landscape issues such as Les raisons du paysage (1995) and Médiance de milieux en paysages (1990). Two books by Augustin Berque recently translated into English are Japan: Cities and Social Bonds (Yelvertoft: Pilkington Press, 1997) and Japan: Nature, Artifice and Japanese Culture (Yelvertoft: Pilkington Press, 1997).
