If there are now . . . some British educationists who recognise certain advantages of the German assessment arrangements, they should also consider that even if these arrangements are ‘effective’ to some degree, this is only so at the expense of enormous psychological damage. It is no exaggeration to say that the majority of adolescents in Germany leave school with their self-esteem permanently damaged.
