ABSTRACT

Intermarriage is believed to be the final stage of assimilation (Gordon 1964). Many western studies have found a significant contribution of intermarriage on the fertility patterns of minority groups (Beaujot et al. 1982; Axelrod 1990; Coleman 1994; Hout and Goldstein 1994). When minorities gradually overcome cultural and structural barriers and intermarry, they tend to broaden their perspectives and cultural patterns, and become less traditional. Their fertility thus becomes lower and more similar to that of the majority.
