ABSTRACT
REBT advocates that clients face `A' in an undisturbed manner at `C' before turning to practical problem solving. For example, a person who is angry with a colleague who behaves obnoxiously towards him is encouraged to undisturb himself about the behaviour before deciding on his next step, which might be to learn assertiveness or leave the job ± the decision would be made in an undisturbed state. Focusing only on a practical goal, like leaving the job, leaves the emotional disturbance intact (e.g. `I absolutely shouldn't have to be subject to this behaviour. It's awful') and ready to `strike' again, if the client meets others who behave in a similar manner towards him. The trainee in this dialogue agrees with the practical goal advanced by the client:
Client: The relationship is boring. I've been in quite a few of them. `Get the hell out', that's what I say.
