ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we introduce the fundamental concepts of health and health care. We also define health economics and argue why it has developed into a discipline in itself. We propose two arguments: the differential characteristics of the health care sector in the economy, and its size. We present a description of the organization of the health care market, and the agents interacting in it. The chapter closes with a description of some canonical forms of structure of a health care system.
