ABSTRACT
In this chapter, we address the presence and relevance of nonprofit organizations in the economy in general and in the health care sector in particular. We define and describe the main characteristics of these type of organizations, and argue why an institution may choose this institutional choice over alternative ones. We concentrate the analysis in several proposals to model hospital behavior.
