ABSTRACT

I believe in the supreme lama and the three jewels. This is to draw attention a little to the treatise composed by the Holy Genghis of old: If you rulers wish to garner all the people, give alms. If you wish to act without making mistakes, promote your officials. If you wish to increase your might, care for your soldiers. If you wish to enjoy yourselves at your ease, strive for harmony. At night, examine your behaviour during the day. Criticise and reject shameful and wicked behaviour. Amongst all the people reinforce your words. When by yourself, examine your thoughts. Be on good terms with the whole people. Consider and know the difference between getting and losing. Enquire into and reconcile the thoughts of the high and the lowly. Hold fast to an immutable disposition. Do your best for the welfare of religion and creatures. Looking after all creatures like your only son, Instruct like a father and nourish like a mother. Managing government and justice according to the doctrine, Maintaining all creatures in happiness, Bring your relatives into peace. Always promote and encourage Those whom you see behaving honestly. Punish criminals thoroughly. Instruct your wife, sons and subjects equally. If you strive to complete The business of several years like the business of a day, You will be like a shield to the state, armour against the enemy. If you do not look to your own rest And do not get wearied by the affairs of others, You will be close to the behaviour of the highest. Renounce such things as: Terrifying rather than caring, Vying jealously with your subjects, Stirring up strife with your brothers, Befriending and falling out with distant people, Offending and upsetting people near you, Not letting your relatives be at peace, Not fearing government and justice,

Doing what bad people say, Not trusting what good people say, Garnering enemies with bitter words, Disciplining everyone with a menacing disposition. Amongst all the virtues of a noble lama A merciful disposition is the greatest virtue. Amongst the thirty-five virtues of a king A loving disposition is the greatest virtue. Amongst the fifteen virtues of a queen A beautiful nature is the greatest virtue. Amongst the nine virtues of an official A steady disposition is the greatest virtue. Though you learn thoroughly all the virtues of a noble lama, If you do not have within you a merciful disposition, Though your virtues are innumerable, They will be of no use at all. Though you have all the authority of a king, If you do not have a loving disposition, You cannot but be of no consequence. Though you have all the beauties of a queen, If your nature is bad, You will return to your old home as a demon. Though you have the nine virtues of an official, If you do not have a steady and good disposition, You will be offensive like a menacing wolf. Therefore strive for the harmony of a steady disposition. Tiger-like officials Follow lion-like rulers. Leopard-like officials Follow tiger-like rulers. Wolf-like officials Follow leopard-like rulers. Fox-like officials Follow wolf-like rulers. Therefore there will be suffering for all. People should learn to strive for Good and true words and honest behaviour. If you scorn those with a high destiny Your own life’s fortune will desert you. If you spoil the happiness of an orphan Your own fortune will be damaged. If you insult those who afford true help, Heaven will be displeased.
