ABSTRACT
Structural design today bears the imprint of a periodic influence from the field of
transportation engineering. Ship hulls, rigging, the development of rolled iron rails,
rotating parts, chassis, road transportation all have structural requirements that have
left their marks on the wider field, and the advent of aviation brought a completely
new class of structure to the forefront of innovation.
