ABSTRACT
1 Senior officers who receive large allowances must be told to have arms and equipment ready for war and to buy pages, for their grandeur and splendour consist in these things, not in the magnificence of their household decorations and furniture. The man who has more of the former will be more acceptable in the sight of the king, and will acquire greater prestige and power among his equals and his subordinates.
