ABSTRACT

In the first two Parts of this book I attempted to provide contexts-one economic, the other social and political-for the development of the English novel during the period. I now want to isolate, and explore in greater depth, two preoccupations which seem to me characteristic of turn-of-the-century fiction: desire and disgust.
