ABSTRACT

The slaves who were brought to the West Indies came from a number of different tribes. Some came from very developed societies with complex systems of government and large-scale farming. Others were used to more primitive conditions-scratching a living from the barren soil by grazing cattle. Each tribe had its own particular identity, its own forms of religion and art. Some tribes specialised in pottery, others in weaving or leather goods. Still others had developed skills in bronze and copper work.
