ABSTRACT

This chapter is about the effects of the three-way relationship when the points of the triangle, artist-picture-therapist, are equally balanced. This creates a dynamic field within which the pictures are central. They occupy the area in between the people and this leads to a therapeutic interaction which is influenced by the imagery (see Figure 9.1). The lure is the unconscious thread which draws the artist and viewer into the picture. This leads, through the gaze, to a deeper connection with the image. In turn this deepens the connection to the self and leads to an intensification of the interpersonal meeting. The engendered gaze is the gaze that is engendered by viewing the image, but that is not all. This term has a double meaning. It is also the gaze which reflects gender issues in the imagery in many overt and subtle ways.
