ABSTRACT

This proposition summarises the spirit in which the offer of a time-extended commitment is made to a client. Both participants agree to a therapeutic engagement which is open-ended, focused and goal-oriented. The commitment is a continuation of the mini-commitment and has been agreed at the first review. The ending date is not specified but is always in view. The working alliance is one of mutual trust, symbolised by the agreement that both participants will give each other sufficient notice of termination. There is a full acknowledgement of the client’s need for personal change exerted by present psychological pain in the face of the challenges of external life.
