I was indeed pleased and gratified at being asked to address your scientific meeting and I want first to express my warm appreciation to your Committee for so doing. After the first flush of pleasure had passed, however, I soon became aware of difficulties. Though there has been a growing and fruitful interchange between some psychoanalysts and some analytical psychologists, there are still differing attitudes and problems of theory and method that do not make communication easy.
