ABSTRACT

The outcome of the first theme of The Unconscious as Infinite Sets (Matte Blanco 1975) follows Freud (1900, 1915) closely and argues how the main characteristics of unconscious functioning can be seen as arising out of symmetrized thought taking over where full consciousness would see asymmetrical relations as well. You will remember that Freud essentially distinguished five of these characteristics: timelessness, displacement, condensation, replacement of external by internal reality and absence of mutual contradiction.
