ABSTRACT
The preceding chapters explored the way our understanding of relationships evolves out of the experience of attachment. Since attachment itself develops as a continual interaction between child and attachment figure, meaning and relationship are inseparable. Each creates the other. But from the beginning this developing organization of perceptions, feelings, purposes and operating strategies is also influenced by ideas which exist independently of the relationship, such as the principles of child rearing, the beliefs and prescriptions of a society.
