ABSTRACT

The statistical tests covered in this chapter only apply to data in which the number of cases falling into various categories is simply counted. The tests determine whether the frequency of cases in the different categories varies across one or more groups or from some expected distribution. We would use these tests to answer the following kinds of questions. Is the number of students in a sample obtaining above a particular mark similar to the number achieving that level in the population from which the sample was drawn? Is the number of students attaining that level similar for coursework carried out at pre-test, post-test and follow-up? Are the numbers of management, sociology, education and psychology students in the sample similar to the numbers studying those subjects in the student population? New sets of data will be introduced to illustrate many of the points covered in this chapter since the number of cases in the example used up to now is generally not ideal for this purpose. The same variables, however, will be used.
