KOLMOGOROV-SMIRNOV TEST FOR ONE SAMPLE The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test for one sample determines whether the distribution of an ordinal variable differs significantly from some theoretical distribution (Kolmogorov 1933; Smirnov 1939). We could use this test to find out whether the distribution of, for example, pre-test course interest for the ten women in our study differed from the distribution of the population or some expected distribution such as that shown in Table 12.1 in which 20 percent obtained a rating of 1 or 4 and 30 per cent had one of 2 or 3.
