The Visible Human Project deploys the computer’s potential as a technique for the production and management of life and biovalue. So far, only one mode of its deployment has been considered-the forms of medical management specific to the body at the scale of macro-anatomy. The fundamental biomedical problem of the body’s opacity and self-contiguous depth, the obstacles that its morphology throws up to visualisation and traversal, and the kinds of solutions presented by the Visible Human Project and its cognate forms of diagnostic and anatomical imaging, have been investigated at length. The computer’s capacities for complex, animate visuality, and its ability to render all data as visual data, lend it to the development of a new repertoire of visceral prosthetics, new ways to address the bodily interior as exteriorised assemblages. In the detection and treatment of cancers, tumours, internal lesions and organ anomalies, and in its specification of anatomical norms, the VHP and its cognates work to intensify, preserve and manage health and vivacity along particular, biomedical lines.
