ABSTRACT

It has been suggested that our most powerful source of influencing clients in a positive direction is our living example of who we are and how we continually struggle to live up to our potential (Corey, 1996). It is also important to remain open to self-evaluation in order to expand one’s awareness of one’s self and to build the foundation for developing one’s abilities as a professional. Therapy, because it is an intimate form of learning, demands a practitioner who is willing to shed stereotyped roles and be a real person in a relationship. If counsellors hide behind the safety of their professional role, their clients may actively work to keep themselves hidden from the counsellor.
