Box 6.3 Raising our heads above the fields

At the beginning of the 1980s, a local township enterprise built a 24-floor hotel in Pudong, then a rural area to the east of the city of Shanghai. The hotel was the tallest building in Pudong at that time, although now the surrounding skyscrapers completely dwarf it. The hotel became a household name in Shanghai almost immediately. The fame was brought about by its name: Youyou.
