ABSTRACT

In many ways, since these words were written a quarter of century ago, European constructors, and the civil servants, standards-makers, building scientists, and manufacturers who in their different roles support building and civil engineering, have worked together actively and competitively through the institutions of the Community-renamed since Maastricht the European Union, standards-making bodies like CEN, through a variety of industry and professional organizations, carry through major public works like the Channel Tunnel, and through numerous joint ventures.
