47Glasgow has a reputation for a unique tradition of tenement housing. In truth thousands of people have lived, and still do live, in tenements in every large British city; what is unique about Glasgow is that tenement living was also experienced by the middle-class population, for whom many private blocks were constructed in the years leading up to the First World War.
