ABSTRACT

67Established in 1903, Letchworth was the first garden city-–the forerunner of Welwyn Garden City and all the British new towns. Although it is a commuter town today, the intention of Letchworth's founders was that it should be one of a number of garden cities, joined to each other in a framework of towns, countryside and interconnecting communications that tried to find a happy balance between the city, with its overcrowding, squalor and high land value, and the countryside with its open space.
